A Morocco surf trip is one of the best-value surf adventures you can plan — but a little structure goes a long way. Here's the framework: when to go, where to base yourself, and camp vs independent travel.
When to go
Morocco's Atlantic coast works across much of the year, with the cooler months generally bringing more consistent swell and the warmer months bringing mellower conditions and warmer water. Beginners honestly do well in mellow seasons; experienced surfers chasing size prefer the core season. Pick your window around the trip you want, not the forecast you hope for.
Where to base yourself
Pick one surf town for the core of your trip. Imsouane for slow surf-town immersion and long friendly waves (start with our Imsouane guide); Taghazout for variety and buzz (see the comparison). Add Essaouira or Marrakech at either end for culture — see why Imsouane belongs on your itinerary.
Surf camp vs independent travel
A surf camp week (like our $700 week: bed, coaching, yoga, food) removes every decision — ideal for first surf trips, solo travelers and anyone short on planning time. Independent travel (bed + booking lessons as you go) suits experienced surfers and flexible schedules. Cost-wise they're closer than people think once you add lessons, food and transport.
How long to stay
Five days minimum, seven ideally, ten if you can. Surf progression is non-linear — days 1–3 build foundations, days 4–7 is where it clicks. Anything under four days is a taster, not a surf trip.
Budget thinking
Morocco is kind to surf-trip budgets: accommodation, food and coaching cost far less than in Europe or the US. As a concrete anchor — our dorm beds are 200 DH/person/night and the full surf camp week is $700 including food. Use that to sanity-check any quote you're given elsewhere.
